Description
Two dictionaries lie behind the present. One is A Lexicon, English and Turkish by J.W. Redhouse, first published in 1861, and reprinted from the original as recently as 1922. The second is the Revised Redhouse Dictionary, English-Turkish, first published in 1950 after 15 years of work, and most recently reprinted in 9172. This dictionary relies heavily on the 1950 edition. Revisions include: 1) English entries have been enriched from sources to include: new technical words and expressions * current British and American slang, colloquial expressions and vulgarisms * the international scientific names of animals and plants, tying together when possible and English name with a Turkish one * English idioms, particularly verbal idioms using adverbs and prepositions 2) The phoenetic system has been revised to suit the everyday needs of a Turkish person using the English language. 3) The Turkish definitions are cast in the language of today, taking full account of new terms introduced through the schools and universities, newspapers, and the Turkish Language Association, but retaining older words when them seem to be common in current use. The Funk and Wagnalls Standard College Dictionary of 1968 has been the principal guide in many matters, including pronunciation. The 1969 Turk Dil Kurumu Turkce Sozluk has set the standard for the Turkish definitions. The dictionary reflects the American point of view of its editors; however British usages in vocabulary, meanings, spelling and pronunciation have usually been noted. - from Amzon
